The cloth was created across 12 months by 45 members of the Launceston Women’s Friendship Group.
Each participant had the opportunity to choose their own pattern, as well as the type of material they wanted to use.
After the individual pieces were completed, the women worked together around a large table to experiment with different patterns before finalising the eventual design.

The concept was suggested by University of Tasmania creative arts PhD candidate Mehrangiz Modarres Tabatabaei, who said the project promoted a better connection between refugees and the wider community.
“When they were selecting their patterns and material, they were communicating in groups and learning new words,” she said.
“Each group gave a presentation to inform others of what they did, how they did it, and what they learnt in creating their motif.
“The connection of the pieces provided them with an opportunity to develop Australian social values, such as sharing ideas, respecting each other’s opinion, constructive criticism, teamwork, and agreeing on a majority vote.”
The Women’s Friendship Group, which began more than three years ago, meets weekly at NICS for skill-sharing activities and projects.
The tablecloth was the work of Afghan and Australian women, with each motif designed using an Afghan mirror embroidery technique.
Ms Tabatabaei said the creative process was specifically tailored to the group.
“The idea of this community engagement art was raised to develop the feeling of belonging among refugees in a new environment,” she said.
“The project’s focus was on a domestic task, which is related to gender identity and the representation of home.”
NICS acting nurse unit manager Sam Beattie said it was great to be able to facilitate the work of the group.
“Our ongoing relationship with the Women’s Friendship Group is another example of NICS’ strong commitment to partnering with the consumer,” she said.
