The Tasmanian Trout Expo began on Saturday, September 22 at Brumby’s Creek.
Trout Expo president Richard Goss said about 80 fish had been weighed in on day one, which was more than previous years.
“We had an absolutely fantastic day, a lot of fish were caught all throughout the day,” he said.
“The weights of the fish were quite heavy, most of the fish caught were over two kilograms.”
Sue Hayward of Youngtown caught the biggest fish of the day, with a massive 2.72-kilogram salmon.
The runner-up was Ian Steves of Burnie with a 2.47-kilogram salmon.
In the junior section Eve Chugg of Longford won with a 2.47-kilogram rainbow trout, followed by Josh Milich with a 2.14-kilogram rainbow.
The only tagged fish of the day was caught by young Bridport fisherman Jayden Slater, who won $50.
Mr Goss said there was still no sign of Tori, the tagged trout worth $10,000, so competitors still had a chance to take out the prize on Sunday.
“There’s still four tagged trout to be caught, so there’s still plenty of prizes to be won,” he said.
Mr Goss said it was great to see so many young people out at Brumby’s Creek fishing for the first time.
“A lot of people caught their first trout, and it was just really great for us to see that,” he said.
“There were lots of mums, dads, and kids out there having a great time.
“Many kids caught more than one fish, so it was really, really good to see.”
Primary Industries and Water minister Sarah Courtney visited the expo on Saturday to check out all the action.
“The expo is a great initiative to introduce new people to angling and promote trout fishing in Tasmania, offering two days of angling licence exempt fishing,” she said.
Ms Courtney said trout fishing attracts more than 5000 visitors from the mainland and overseas to the state each year.
The expo will continue on Sunday, September 23 from 8am. Tickets available on the gate.
