The Chinese training notes have been used at local businesses and although they appear similar to a legal $50 note, the money has blue Chinese characters printed on both sides across the transparent window and does not have serial numbers.
“Police are asking businesses to be vigilant for these fake $50 notes and to contact police if they have information as to who is tendering the fake notes,” Detective Senior Constable Dean Logan said.
Anyone who believes they have a suspicious note, particularly $50 notes, has been asked to handle the money as little as possible and store it in an envelope.
Businesses and retailers who have been provided with fake currency have been urged to check CCTV footage to identify those who have handed over the money and to supply that footage to police.
When reporting cases of fake notes, businesses and retailers should also note any relevant information, such as how it came into your possession, a description of the person who passed it, or any companion and any vehicle used.
Anyone with information about fake notes should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
