Relatively new to the Tasmanian athletics calendar, the event was the brainchild of John Claridge, a veteran Launceston runner with experience in local events like the Three Peaks Challenge, Tamar Valley Classic, Lilydale Lope, Launceston Ten and Bridport 10km.
A multiple winner of the Ross Marathon, Claridge eventually succeeded in establishing a similar event in Launceston which attracted nearly 350 entrants to the inaugural race last year despite inclement weather.
This year’s event will be held at the North Esk precinct, with distances to suit beginners through to ultra-marathon runners.
Claridge said the day would have something for everyone – including spectators with entertainment ranging from food stalls to children’s activities.
“We’re lucky to have the support of a number of food vendors on the day,” he said.
Each runner will get a lightweight cup as part of their race entry with two drinking stations on the course.
Race packs can be collected from St.LukesHealth’s head office in The Quadrant on Friday between 10am and 3pm.
A fast flowing race course is centred around the North Esk precinct and takes in the trails of Heritage Forest and the river foreshore.
Claridge said the course is safe and accessible for those attempting their first longer distance. Presentations are from 9am (quarter-marathon) to 11.30am (marathon and half), midday (5km) to 5pm for the 100km which has a cut-off time of midnight.
