Artist Ella Millar explored watercolours in the traditional form, Aboriginal elder Uncle Murray Everett used Launceston-sourced ochre to teach painting, and photographer Jasper da Seymour played with light techniques to create unique works. 

The works are now exhibited at St Leonards Primary School, with the opening held on September 18. 

Eleven-year-old Chloe Richards said she had also learned about culture through the project. 

“Uncle Murray brought in some ochre, and we used paintbrushes and painted what we thought,” she said. “We learned that ochre is like gold to the Aboriginals, it’s like more than gold. It’s very important to them.” 

St Leonards head of arts Karolyn Davidson said art helped students increase their awareness of the world around them. 

“Students grow through art experiences,” she said.

“It’s a vital part of our curriculum.”
