Around 30 beef cows walked on to the highway between 12am and 1am on Wednesday, not far from the Ashgrove Cheese factory.
Tasmania Police responded to the three crashes after some of the cows were struck by vehicles, a spokesperson said.
“The road was closed for around 20 minutes while a number of deceased cows were removed from the road,” the spokesperson said.
No people were injured as a result of the crashes.
Ashgrove Cheese marketing and communications manager Anne Bennett said the cows were beef, not dairy, cattle and did not belong to the Elizabeth Town business.
“A neighbour’s beef cattle got onto the Bass Highway.”
A 60 kilometre per hour speed limit was put in place along on the Bass Highway around the crash site.
