The North was playing on its home court at Elphin Sports Stadium and were good early after North-West dropped three out of the first five doubles.
In-form Wynyard premiership captain David Jones and Brent Munday had a battle on their hands before eventually holding off Venon Lee and Hong Li 22/20, 10/21, 21/17.
The singles round was where the North made its move winning four out of the six matches on offer.
Devonport’s Stephen Gale held off his Northern opponent in Hong Li in an epic three set battle.
Then Devonport’s Brett Lowry continued to showcase his improvement this season.
His front court touch was too much for the North’s George Peters.
Going into the last round of doubles the North-West needed to win all five matches.
But this was a task that was far too great as the North avenged the previous year’s defeat to take the series to one match each.
Northern captain Josh Partridge paid tribute to the late Leon Young who recently died after a long battle with cancer (of which the cup is named after).
In his acceptance speech, Partridge said “ this one is for you Leon”, which summed it up beautifully.
