Jack Harrison Sadler appeared briefly in the Launceston Magistrates Court on Tuesday afternoon.
The 26-year-old has been charged over the death of Jake Anderson-Brettner, who went missing on August 15.
Mr Anderson-Brettner’s torso was found by police on August 19 and formally identified this week.
During Tuesday’s appearance family and friends of the alleged murder victim filled the back of the room and the hall outside the court.
Lawyer Ben Ashman spoke on behalf of Mr Sadler’s lawyer Greg Richardson.
He said Mr Richardson, who is based on the North-West, would be in Launceston on Wednesday and requested the matter be adjourned until then.
Magistrate Sharon Cure remanded Mr Sadler in custody to reappear at 11am Wednesday.
As he was taken away, a member of the gallery called out “you piece of s---”.
Gemma Clark, 25, of Riverside, has also been charged in relation to the case.
She pleaded not guilty to a charge of being an accessory after the fact during an appearance on August 22.
Ms Clark was committed to the Supreme Court for a directions hearing on October 15.
Mr Anderson-Brettner’s remains were released to his family this week, and he will be farewelled during a service in Launceston on Thursday afternoon.
