Representing Asia-Pacific in the two-day teams competition that saw 20 events held for men and women, the 23-year-old took the lead after two laps of the race, which saw the last-placed runner eliminated for the final four laps.
McSweyn easily avoided the cut and was placed second in the four-man field heading into the final lap, but was unable to keep pace with Americas runners Paul Chelimo, Mohammed Ahmed and Europe’s Henrik Ingebrigtsen, finishing in a time of 8:02.01, almost five seconds behind the winner, Chelimo.
The result comes just one week after McSweyn suffered a dislocated shoulder at the finish line of the Diamond League 5000m final in Belgium, where he ran a personal best time of 13:05.23.
