We have producers from whom you can directly buy in Launceston, Perth, Westbury or Mole Creek, or through recognised outlets such as farmers’ markets or Young’s Vegie Shed.
I would never buy honey from a supermarket as its authenticity is then doubtful as evidenced by the latest furore.
Dick James, Launceston.
Paul Keating Quote
PAUL Keating once said: “If you want a friend in Canberra, take your dog”.
Kenneth Gregson, Swansea.
Land Rights
GOOD to see the new Australia Country Party supporting Aboriginal land rights.
According to the public notices, they are changing their name from Australia Country Party to Australia Party/Give it Back.
Michael Mansell, Aboriginal Land Council chairman.
A Message from Mars
GO RIGHT to the source and ask the horse.
He'll give you the answer that you endorse.
Which in the case of climate change is: Mars ice caps are melting so global warming is a feature of our universe and not influenced by human activity. (M.Chugg, The Examiner, September 5).
Well the Pacific Islands forum on climate change currently being held in Nauru would seriously beg to differ.
As would NASA which has been monitoring our ice caps since 1984.
While the predictions made some years ago are off the mark - our ice caps are melting at a rapid rate and sea levels are rising.
To deny human activity as a primary cause requires a very selective sifting of the facts.
Tony Newport, Hillwood.
Banks and Adverts
I TRY not to watch TV commercials, probably because they don’t usually tell the truth and they waste time.
However when I do happen to see ads, the ones that really annoy me are the current Westpac ads.
Tugging at the heartstrings with: “Help. It’s what Australians do, or if you’ve lost a loved one, were here to help”.
They really make my blood boil.
A company that has just been fined $35 million for unconscionable conduct and breaking customer protection provisions is telling us they are here to help.
Yes to make bigger profits for the shareholders and huge salaries for CEOs.
By the way who is going to pay the fines? Does it come from shareholders who will get reduced dividends or should it come from the top managers who either condoned this behaviour or failed to manage this rip off.
Some much for any political party that naively supports the wild idea that the market will self-regulate and competition will bring best practices and reduce prices, not to mention that better profits for big business will see wages growth.
There is a simple fact that if someone in society is making huge profits someone somewhere else is losing out.
The rubberband will only stretch so far in all directions at once.
Jeff Jennings, Bridport.
Congratulations
MAY I through your paper, congratulate Jo Palmer on her interesting and always pertinent articles in (The Sunday Examiner, September 2). She launched a well-deserved tirade at the “ egotistical and out of touch” parliamentarians who have deposed yet another Prime Minister.
How long is his successor going to last I would like to know, before he too is cast on the scrap heap, not by the people of Australia; my goodness fancy thinking of letting them have a say , but by his own party.
Let me support Jo, and say how about you stop thinking about yourselves, and start working for the good of the people who elected you to represent them.
See if you can improve their lives because there are many in Tasmania with lives that could use a great deal of improvement.
I would not care to sleep in the open for even one of these freezing nights we are currently enduring.
Jill Clark , Riverside.
Taxpayer Savings
REMEMBER when our Canberra pollies were transported in Holdens, and now instead of perhaps hyunda or kia price equivalents the taxpayer has to fork out for luxury BMWs.
For some events a luxury car may be appropriate, but in the event of the majority of short trips home or local events usually with only one individual, cars such as the electric toyota prius and similar cars would not only be far cheaper to purchase, with much less service expenditure proven by taxi usage results.
Would also send an excellent message to fellow Australians and the world that our government is not only willing to embrace savings on expenditure, but are also showing willingness to do their bit for the environment.
Don Davey, Launceston.
Disillusionment
IN one way I was sorry Peter Dutton didn’t become Prime Minister. I really loved his stated policy of removing the GST from power bills. It certainly would have made the cost of energy cheaper. I hope the new Treasurer Josh Frydenberg will take pity on us age pensioners and not remove the energy supplement from our pensions.
The new administration will not want to upset pensioners, as it is the Coalition will need every single vote it can get to make even a respectable showing at the next federal election, such is the disillusionment of voters.
