More than 50 workers from the company helped Youth Futures improve the Heritage Forest Community Garden.

It’s not the first time Boag’s has shown its green thumb, partnering with Landcare Tasmania and Tamar NRM in 2017 to remove boneseed from areas of West Tamar.

Site manager Nathan Calman said the premise of the initiative was simple.

“We just try to partner up with a worthwhile community cause each year, with everyone’s time going toward putting some muscle behind what they are doing,” he said.

The Heritage Forest Community Garden was started five years ago from a grant received by the Migrant Resource Centre.

Since then, Work for the Dole crews have built fencing, weeded sections of the area, constructed a toilet block, and put together the garden beds. 

The garden also features a vineyard, from which grapes are sold for social enterprise

Workers on Friday were tasked with putting hay in the new garden beds, and also spreading mulch around them. 

Youth Futures quality assistance manager Charlotte Blank said spring was an exciting time to be involved in the garden.

“We’re having a Springfest here on November 17,” she said.

“The plan is to sell what we are growing in our hot houses, and use the funds to maintain and buy equipment.

“We’re also inviting lots of stall holders to come and sell goods that may be growing in the garden beds.”
