As part of the Junction Arts Festival, popular architecture and design event Open House will be held in Launceston.
The free event will allow visitors to go behind the scenes of 16 Launceston buildings and to explore classic examples of Victorian, Federation and Colonialist design.
Organised and run by the Tasmanian chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects, Open House is a local version of a global event first held in London in 1992 and now staged in more than 30 cities.
Open House has been held in Hobart for the past five years, but Saturday will mark the first event in Launceston.
Organiser Jennifer Nichols said the event gave visitors the chance to see how others live, work and play and to see the city from a different angle.

“For five years now, locals and visitors have had the opportunity to see behind the scenes of Hobart’s unique built environment and enjoy a combination of heritage and contemporary architecture,” she said.
“Launceston’s architecture is similarly compelling.
“We are thrilled to be able to open up some of the city’s hidden gems to the public and allow them to enjoy their history and stories.”
Buildings on display include Architecture and Design at UTAS, Brickworks Launceston Design Centre, Launceston Town Hall, Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Paddy Dorney House, City Baptist Church and Milton Hall, Bock Warehouse, Clarry Pryor House, the Majestic Theatre, Launceston Eye Hospital, St John’s Church, the Supreme Court, Waverley Mills, National Theatre, Chalmer’s Church and Design Tasmania.
Some buildings require registration to visit.

Open House will return to Hobart on November 10 and 11.
The Junction Arts Festival runs from September 5 to 9 and features more than 25 events and projects.
