The Magpies were 2-6 at the midway point of the season, but have won eight of their past nine to lock in a semi-final fixture with Hillwood this Sunday.

Another three wins against top-four sides are required for premiership success, but Gee has no doubts about his side’s ability.

“There’s no reason why we can’t win it - we’ve matched it with the top teams in the comp,” Gee said.

“If it wasn’t for a slow start we probably would have finished in the top three, we can match it with anyone and I think we can beat anyone on our day.”

Now in his fourth year in black and white since crossing over from George Town, Gee has increased his season goal tally year on year.

Having notched 22 in 2016 and 24 in 2017, Gee has slotted 29 in 17 games this season to provide a handy chop out for veteran full-forward Lee Nichols.

The 20-year-old saved his second-biggest bag of the season for last weekend’s elimination final win, kicking four including a last-quarter snap that broke Longford’s resistance in a best-on-ground performance. 

“It’s my third finals series which is nice - we’re going well and I love it out here, we’ve got a pretty good forward line,” he said.

“We’ve got a good mix up front, especially when (Daniel Roozendaal) goes down there, it’s quite handy having him down there.”
