Mr Alexander quit as alderman of the City of Launceston council on Monday, citing family and business as the reasons behind his decision.
He made the announcement to his fellow alderman at the council’s August meeting, after handing in resignation earlier that morning.
Mr Alexander said he believed his past experience as alderman and his business acumen give him the right skills needed to be Hobart’s next Lord Mayor.

“There are plenty of people putting their hand up right now for the role of mayor,” he said.
“But I really believe what Hobart needs right now is leadership, strong, sensible common sense leadership, and someone with a proven track record.
“I believe I have both the business experience and local government experience and qualifications required to provide this.”
Mr Alexander was elected to the Launceston council in 2014 but he is a businessman that grew up on the West Coast of Tasmania.
He lived in Hobart for more than 18 years before moving to Launceston.
Hobart’s mayor position is currently held by Ron Christie, who was elevated to the position following the departure of former lord mayor Sue Hickey.
Ms Hickey was successful in being elected to state parliament and now serves in the Tasmanian Government as Speaker.
Mr Alexander’s resignation will not trigger a recount in Launceston, as the announcement was within six months of the local government elections.
Local government elections will be held across the state in October.
