The fuel was stolen from four machines, parked at the Hazell Bros roadworks site office on the highway, at St Peters Pass.
Police believe several people were involved in the theft, and that it could have involved a tanker, or a ute or truck and several fuel drums.
Police further say that it’s likely the siphoning took some time.
The fuel was stolen over the weekend, some time between 4pm on Friday and 6am on Monday.
Two batteries were also stolen from an illuminated trailer sign.
The work site is directly on the side of the highway, and police have called for witnesses who may have seen something suspicious at the site, throughout the weekend.
Information can be passed on to acting Sergeant Adam Forrest at Oatlands police station by calling 6254 0014, or reported anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at crimestopperstas.com.au.
