Mr Alexander made the announcement during the council’s meeting on Monday after tendering his resignation that morning.
“Today will be my last day as an alderman of this great city,” Mr Alexander told his colleagues at the meeting.
“I have truly enjoyed my time on the City of Launceston council and, more importantly, I’ve enjoyed working with all aldermen throughout this term.
“I believe that is why this group of aldermen will go down in history as being one of the most collegiate group of people that have achieved so much in this four year period for the city of Launceston.”
The resignation will be effective from Monday and a recount will not be completed, as the resignation is within six months of the next local government elections.
Mr Alexander said business and family reasons were behind his “difficult decision” to resign.
He said those reasons were resulting in him spending more time in Hobart, than Launceston.
It is unclear if Mr Alexander will contest at the Hobart City Council elections in October.
Mr Alexander thanked the ratepayers of Launceston who voted him in to serve on the council.
City of Launceston council mayor Albert van Zetten thanked Alderman Alexander for his time.
“Darren [Alexander] has been a larger-than-life addition to the council and it has been fantastic to have an alderman who is such an enthusiast for technology and the business sector represented in Launceston,” Alderman van Zetten said. Mr Alexander was elected to the council in 2014.
