Staff from all departments of the Break O’Day Council have been working and planning tirelessly for months to create a memorable event for all attending.

Community services project officer Erica Lowry said the council consisted of about 50 people who were all taking ownership of their areas and helping out with the project in some way, shape, or form – all while continuing their everyday roles.

“Everyone has been working together as one huge team,” she said.

One aspect of the organisation was the council’s works department’s efforts to organise all infrastructure to support the event.

A work department spokesman said projects included things such as water connections, sewage management, electrical supplies, repairing barricades, adding extra street lighting, and waste collection.

“Down here, we just work the problem. We knew that it was more work, more volume on top of what we were doing, but it was just a matter of just working on what needed to be done, putting the arrangements in place,” he said.

“It sounds simple, but we didn’t get over-stressed by it.

“We’ve got key people that are very capable and know what to do, which makes it easier.”

He said St Helens was the smallest population centre that the One Night Stand has come to.

“For a small town to gear up for this is quite positive,” he said.

“I’m keen to see the rec ground full of all these thousands of people. We look at it now, and it’s empty, so it’s hard to rationalise it full of people.

“It’s especially quite interesting to see how people come together.”

Other important projects for the council included putting together a traffic management plan for the days surrounding the event, connecting with businesses and the community, and working closely with triple j.
