Family Based Care Association (FBC) has been a leading force in the provision of community services in Tasmania for more than 25 years. FBC has recently expanded its service area to include communities in Northern Tasmania.
CEO, Doug Doherty, said their aim was to “keep care local.”
“One of our decisions in moving to Launceston was to provide more choice within the community,” Mr Doherty said.
“I think it is very important for our clients that we are a local provider, we aren’t a faceless company based on the mainland, we are a Tasmanian not for profit, and if a client has a problem, they want to talk about they are dealing with locals.”
With a new office in Launceston, located at 50b Frankland Street, FBC now can meet with new and existing clients from this region on an appointment basis.
FBC are currently offering the Launceston community, services for home care packages levels 1-4 and services under the NDIS such as social support, personal carer respite and domestic assistance.
All support provided to clients is individualised to suit their needs.
“Each participant works with our experienced staff to develop an individualised support plan which identifies all support requirements relevant to their behavioural, communication, personal care, social and community access,” Mr Doherty said.
“We aim to make a difference to those who may be struggling with independent living – whether it be due to ill health, age or disability – by providing assistance and support.”
One of the reasons for FBC’s expansion into Launceston was to offer more choice to locals.
With new reforms within the community services sector, clients are now actively involved in decision making about what services they receive.
“The biggest reform has been choice and control of aged and disability care,” Mr Doherty said.
“Clients now have the opportunity to choose their care provider, and if they don’t like the service, they are getting they can change.
“Clients become more empowered when they have control over their care and where their money goes.
"Now more than ever service providers have to be responsive, it is important Family Based Care establish themselves in the Launceston area as a provider of choice.”
Mr Doherty said it was important for FBC to build on their reputation and continue to grow the services offered in Northern Tasmania.
“We want to provide better care, the way people want it,” he said. “We currently have 20 staff in Launceston; however we have more than 200 staff based in the North West which we can bring in to ensure the provision of care.”
