Every year, Riverside Primary School’s Readers’ Picnic brings students, families, and staff together in conjunction with the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Book Week for a day of fun, food, and costumes.
Blessed by blue skies and only a light breeze, this year was no different.
With most of the school’s 750 pupils dressing up as their favourite book characters, Alex Bromley, 12, took an especially creative and hand-made approach.
“I came as a character I made up myself from six different books,” he said.
The character, Cuberknight, features in a number of books from the series Alex has been writing.
But the students were also not the only ones dressed up.
Dressed in red and white Where’s Wally stripes, coordinated with many of the other staff, assistant principal Theresa Whitney said the day was always a huge success.
“It’s where we invite families to come along and enjoy reading, lunch, and books,” she said.
“We get grandmas, grandpas - the whole works.”
The Children’s Book Council of Australia Book Week runs August 18-24.
