One of the school’s student houses, Savigny House, has organised to throw out the school’s uniform policy for one day – for a cause.
The house is holding a crazy tie day to raise funds for not-for-profit organisation Kiva.
RELATED STORIES:
Kiva was founded in 2005 in San Francisco and uses crowd-funded loans to support those in third-world countries who need a hand.
The funds are used to support people who need help starting their own business, or create their own employment to help their families.
Grammar student Milly Wickham said Savigny House has supported Kiva for about three years, but they have not held a fundraising event specifically for the not-for-profit.
“We have made it a bit of a competition between our tutor groups, to see which tutor could raise the most money,” she said.
The crazy tie day idea was the brain child of one of the tutors, which he shared with student George Booth.
“We then took it to the relevant school people to make it happen,” he said.
Grammar headmaster Richard Ford said the school supported its students in entrepreneurial pursuits, which in turn lined up with supporting Kiva.
“One of the school’s aims is to encourage students to be entrepreneurs, so in turn they can take those skills into their own communities and into the world,” he said.
Miss Wickham said she hoped the crazy tie day would help raise awareness among her peers.
“It’s great to have plain clothes days but I hope that when people see the ties they will ask what it’s all about,” she said.
- Launceston Church Grammar School’s crazy tie day will be held on August 28. Students will be encouraged to wear a crazy tie for a gold coin donation. All funds raised will go to Kiva.
