That’s the word from Devonport Strikers skipper Brayden Mann as his side prepares to jump on a plane to Melbourne for the second time this month for a “smash and grab” mission, with Avondale awaiting them at ABD Stadium, a moment he said would be the biggest in the club’s history.
“We’re feeling good, as we do know what to expect now and the whole process of playing interstate,’’ Mann said on Monday.
“Our routine will be very much the same (as before their 3-1 win over Northcote City), so for us, nothing will really change, so it is important we go over there with a relaxed, but also intense attitude that we can get the job done over there.”
But with that in mind, Mann said he knew Tuesday would be another step up in class compared to what they experienced against Northcote, which saw a Tasmanian team win a FFA Cup fixture interstate for the first time.
Avondale is third in the NPL Victoria competition, and had last weekend off with a “catch-up” round in the state. Before that it had a 2-1 loss against Bentleigh Greens, the team which ended the Strikers’ FFA Cup run at this stage in 2016.
It reached this stage of the FFA Cup after a 4-1 win over Marconi Stallions in their round of 32 match in July.
“They are a really high quality outfit, and their attacking players are very, very good and they attack very quickly,’’ Mann said.
“We know we are going to have our work cut out for us defensively, but we know if we defend really, really well and hold them out, then we can hurt them on the other end, so for us it is about making sure we do that, which will take a collective defensive effort.
“When we do have the ball we need to make sure we are smart with the ball. But most importantly we need to make sure we enjoy the moment. We know we will go in as massive underdogs, but we need to be able to express ourselves, play really and see what happens.
“Being underdogs, that does suit us as that is the Devonport way as we are a small city and we like the challenge and we know we have to go over there and believe, as it is not an impossible task for us to go over there and get the win.
“With the team that we have got, we have some quality players, so they are going to have to be worried about us like we are of them.”
Mann said the chance to again represent the state in the competition was something the Strikers would embrace, as they look to get past the round of 16 for the first time.
But they will have to do it with a slightly different line-up to the one that disposed of Northcote after the club last week parted ways with Lithuanian import Gediminas Krusa, one of the Strikers’ best in their round of 32 win, for failing to meet club standards.
Kick-off on Tuesday will be at 7.30pm with live streams of the match on the Fox Sports website and the My Football app.
