In wet conditions, the Zack Gilmore-led men’s team pushed hard during the Victorian Tour of the Great South Coast’s stage 1 criterium through the streets of Mount Gambier.
Gilmore and debutant Conor Leahy finished the 1.2-kilometre 30-lap circuit in 23rd and 39th respectively, to be 20 seconds behind.
In the afternoon’s 65km stage 2 road race around the town’s Blue Lake region, Leahy, Luke Thompson and Zach Johnson crossed the line in a large pack 32 seconds after the leaders.
The team is 12th in overall classification, while Leahy is ninth in the young rider and 27th in general.
The five-day, six-stage tour continues on Thursday with a 128.5km leg.
