Figures released by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research on Monday showed the completion rate for that year was 40.2 per cent; a marginal rise from 38.7 per cent in 2015.
Completion rates in all jurisdictions rose as well – more than 10 per cent in New South Wales and Western Australia.
Nationwide, the completion rate was 46.9 per cent.
Students involved in natural or physical science were most likely in 2016 to complete their course while architecture and design students were least likely.
The completion rate for government-funded VET programs at certificate I and above was 53 per cent in Tasmania; the highest rate in five years.
Vocational Education and Skills Assistant Minister Karen Andrews said the results showed state and territory governments were better targeting their subsidies and looking towards toward skill set enrolments where people studied a small number of specific units.
