Basketball Tasmania’s new Northern development officer arrived from Townsville with nine years of experience under his belt, having begun coaching at the age of 16, spent time in the US college system and played in the Queensland Basketball League.
The Rockhampton-born 25-year-old said he was excited about getting the best out of a Launceston talent pool extending its boundaries year on year.
“I think there’s a lot of depth of talent here, that’s probably the biggest thing that’s jumped out at me,” Kann said.
“It’s really exciting moving forward across all age groups from under-12 to under-18s, we’ve just had our trials for our development programs so I’ve had an opportunity to see them all and I’m really excited moving forward.
“Tasmania has had a lot of really good results lately at national level so I’m looking to continue to add that.
“If I can assist in any part in improving the athletes here and continuing their development to help (state head coach Mark Radford’s) vision of being a real powerhouse at the national tournaments… that’s where I want to get to.”
Kann said he had been impressed with Basketball Tasmania’s structure and the amount of contact time between coaches and athletes.
The former Queensland state development officer has also had help learning the ropes from his Launceston predecessor.
“I’ve talked to Darren Best a lot actually since I’ve started,” Kann said.
“I’ve a pretty good relationship with him and I touched base with him before he left as well, he’s been really helpful providing a few little hints here and there to make sure I’m getting on track.”
