Women in northern Tasmania are lucky to have TasGynae offering an exceptional obstetric and gynaecological service from stunning new premises in High St, Launceston.
Dr Ben Dhanaraj and his wife Joanne (an anaesthetist at LGHl) have rejuvenated and repurposed one of the city’s beautiful historic buildings, former guesthouse Ashton Gate House.
The couple are adamant it was “meant to be”.
Once known as Moss Side, the home was originally built in 1880 for Andrew Birchall, whose daughter Ida was Tasmania’s first obstetrician and gynaecologist.

“It’s perfectly located adjacent to St Georges Square, which makes appointments easier for families and it’s central in a medical precinct with plenty of off street parking.
“We fell in love with Launceston in 2012 and decided to stay and we recently fell in love with this old building which heritage architect Lionel Morrell and builders Burleigh and Dean helped us transform into a place that is not only sympathetic to the era but sympathetic to the ambience and atmosphere desired by the women who visit.”
Dr Dhanaraj is an obstetrician and gynaecologist with skills in advanced laparoscopy and he takes on many complex, high-risk obstetric cases and helps women with infertility problems by working closely with TasIVF.
He is part of a talented team that is dedicated to providing the skills, support, latest medical technology and and a broad service that puts women at ease when they’re dealing with the trials and tribulations of pregnancy, childbirth and overall health and wellbeing.
Dr Felicity Dukes is a specialist obstetrician and gynaecologist who has particular interests in high risk obstetrics and laparoscopic surgery and is involved in the provision of sexual assault services in northern Tasmania.
Dr Clark is renowned for his specialist care of endometriosis sufferers and his skills around laparoscopic hysterectomy, pelvic floor reconstructive surgery, treatment for prolapse and incontinence, contraceptive and family planning advice and treatment, infertility care up to IVF treatment and management of first trimester pregnancy.
TasGynae, which also conducts consultations in Ulverstone three weeks out of four, has its own midwife, Mel Cruse for experienced birthing support and will soon welcome Tess Crawley and Associates to the practice to offer a perinatal psychology service.
