Whitford caught up to starring Glenorchy half back Daniel Joseph on Saturday with 16 votes each.
But the 2015 winner will have a nervous wait over the next week as the Bombers sit out round 20 with the bye.
Joseph will have an extra match to collect votes and pull into the lead.
The North Launceston coach polled three votes in the Bombers’ 163-point demolition of North Hobart.
Midfielder Josh Ponting picked up two votes to sit in third overall on 11 votes.
Youngsters Chayce Jones and Jake Hinds starred in Launceston’s stirring 34-point home victory over Clarence.
Jones was voted best afield just ahead of experienced forward Mitch Thorp.
