Launceston Lightning used a home court advantage to take out three divisions at the weekend’s Elite 8 tournament.
The boys’ under-12s saw an all-Lightning grand final as Launceston 1 notched a 48-39 win over Launceston 3, while Launceston 1 beat Penguin Blues 58-40 in the boys’ under-14s.
The Launceston 1 under-18 boys’ team also tasted grand final success, downing Smithton Saints 74-62.
Launceston’s Lachie and Caleb Brewer were prolific in the under-14 and under-12 boys’ divisions respectively, while Bronte Smith played well for the North in the girls’ under-18s.

The bracket-style tournament was the first of its kind to be held and despite some games being cancelled due to a leak at the St Patrick’s College courts, Basketball Tasmania events manager Scott Boucher was happy to label the weekend a success.
“The feedback was really good, it’s an exciting format because it’s different,” Boucher said.
“People were excited about the format and it gave them a different outlook on the tournament – moving forward we hope to have it every year and increase the frequency.”
The tournament’s second round will be held in Launceston on August 25 and 26.
