After a lean patch for the state, Launceston midfielder Chayce Jones and versatile Northern Bomber Tarryn Thomas are two of four Tasmanians invited to attend the national AFL draft combine later this year.
Mariners captain Jones, a Longford junior and under-18 All-Australian on-baller, and Thomas, a North Melbourne Next Generation Academy player, will be joined at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium by Fraser Turner (Clarence) and Nick Baker (Lauderdale).
All four represented the Allies and were part of Tasmania’s unbeaten under-18 national academy series campaign, for which Thomas was named player of the tournament. Fremantle tall Hugh Dixon (Tigers) was Tasmania’s only player to be invited to the event in 2017.
The October invitation will see the quartet be put through a range of testing in front of recruiters and coaching staff from all 18 AFL clubs.
All have had talks with various clubs, with Thomas undoubtedly to be selected in the first round by North Melbourne, who have first rights to the star.
AFL clubs will now work on submitting their list of nominations for state combines in the coming weeks, where the state’s other draft hopefuls will get their chance to impress.
