The Tamar Peace Festival’s theme for 2018 is perfectly embodied by an upcoming evening at the Star Theatre, according to the festival co-ordinator.

The Invermay theatre will host one of the opening events of the festival, with a showing of 2014 film Pride on July 31.
Pride chronicles the efforts of the LGBTQI community in Britain to help families affected by the miner’s strike in 1984 and 1985.
Festival co-ordinator Sonja Hindrum said the film was a natural choice to include in the festival.
“Pride was chosen because it fits perfectly with our theme of respect,” she said.
“In the film, opposite groups – the unions and the LGBT community – both come together to support the miners.”
The Tamar Peace Festival, running from July 24 to August 11, was another chance for the Star Theatre to give something back to the community, according to co-owner Ben Davis.
He said the theatre jumped at the chance to be a part of the festival.
“We like to get involved with local groups and we think it’s really important to get involved with these initiatives on a regular basis,” he said.
“Getting involved with the Peace Festival was really in line with our core philosophy at the Star.”
Respect for our local community and respect for public opinion is really one of the reasons for our early success at the Star.

Mr Davis said the theme of respect was something he had personally reflected on in the lead-up to the event.
“From the very moment we bought the Star Theatre, we’ve been involved with the local community to see what they have wanted,” he said.
“It’s having that respect for community and what they wanted from a new business that was really important to us.
“Respect for our local community and respect for public opinion is really one of the reasons for our early success at the Star.”
The festival features more activities in 2018 than it has in any other year, according to Ms Hindrum, with 60 events planned.
Tickets for Pride are only available through a pre-sale at startheatre.com.au for $25.
Tickets include a beverage of choice and light refreshments.
