It has been more than a decade since Combe performed in Launceston, but he is bringing his four-piece Bellyflop in a Pizza Band to town for an 18 and over show at The Saloon Bar on Friday night.
Expecting an audience of 20- and 30-somethings who grew up with his music, Combe said there might be some grandparents in there as well.
“I have three different audiences: modern children who love Wash Your Face in Orange Juice, 30 to 35 year olds who love Toffee Apple, and those in their 60s who bought the album for their children 30 years ago,” Combe said.
All Combe’s favourites like Mr Clicketty Cane, Newspaper Mama, Spaghetti Bolognaise and Toffee Apple are on the play list, along with some newer songs.
“They’re the ones young adults know the best, but there will be some new songs from the album I released last year,” Combe said.
“People want to hear those songs.”
When he last visited Launceston Combe performed a similar show with a keyboard player, but this time he is bringing the whole band for the full effect.
“It’s a classy band with four really good players on keyboard, bass, guitar and drums,” he said.
One of the most thrilling parts of performing is hearing the words he wrote sung back to him, Combe said.
“I can walk into any school and everyone knows the songs,” he said.
“The kids love it. They go crazy and shout the lyrics back at me. It’s quite touching actually.”
But it is not just children who respond that way; Combe said his adult audiences were just as enthusiastic.
“Young adults often come dressed up in newspaper hats. They are reliving their childhood,” he said.
