The Stompin Youth Choreographic Project Studio will present a series of seven works on Saturday, revolving around the theme, at the Annexe Theatre.
The dancers, aged between 13 and 30, have worked with Brisbane-based multidisciplinary artist Lucas Stibbard in the lead-up to the event.
“We’ve worked with Lucas to try and come up with a question to ask about escapism and thoguht about how we relate to escapism,” 17-year-old Belle Hilder said.
“My question was, ‘how do we escape? … I’ve created a piece on how each of us escapes our minds and what we do to move out of the stress.”
Stibbard has worked with the group to help them further explore the concept and to teach them more about artistic “processes”.
The show will also be performed as a part of Junction Arts Festival in September.
“I’ve tried to makes sure the work has substantial depth of thought and meaning behind it,” Stibbard said.
“It’s been around getting them to look into not just what’s the first answer, with the theme, but getting them to keep going down that path and making sure that the gesture and movement they’re doing is toward the question that they’re asking.”
The performance is on at the University of Tasmania’s Annexe Theatre on Saturday at 5pm.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for concession.
