On Wednesday, Mr Turnbull was quizzed on his views following the spectacular fallout of the much anticipated summit with Mr Trump and Russia’s president Vladimir Putin. Mr Trump’s comments at the press conference following a two-hour meeting with Mr Putin were staggering and showed his ability was below-par.
John McCain, a Republican stalwart and senior figure, described the US president’s comments as “one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory”.
The US president told the media pack, therefore the world, that he believed Mr Putin over his own country’s intelligence. No less than 24 hours later he was singing a different tune. Yet his message was still off-key. He said he misspoke. That the sentence should have been a double negative therefore was misconstrued.
Mr Trump is one to call a spade, a spade. Well he will call a spade, an icecream – but you get the idea. He is not one to mince words.
If he was a businessman running a company then his meeting with the Russian president would have possibly been a good tactic. Build a relationship and then fight hard come deal time. Due to his inexperience in politics, Mr Trump didn’t realise it was deal time then and there. There was no negotiation to be had.
He had a meeting with an autocratic leader who is linked to some atrocious crimes, including the shooting down of the plane MH17.
Mr Putin’s words mean nothing. It’s his actions that cause the greatest concern. For the US president, his words clearly mean nothing, yet they also continue to create the greatest damage.
One of the greatest leaders and voted best president of the US was Franklin D. Roosevelt. FDR was known for his intelligence and self-confidence. He handled situations with calmness and clarity. He led his country through the Great Depression and World War II. He was everything Mr Trump is not.
Mr Trump is the leader of the free world. His decisions and statements can directly and indirectly impact Australia, which is why we should be just as appalled and concerned over the past 48 hours as the American public.
