In November last year, it was announced the awards would be held at the gorge in March 2019. It is only the second time in the event’s history the ceremony has been held outside a capital city. 

Organisers have determined the best place to set up the marquee, which will house about 800 people, is over the pool.

This comes at an extra cost funds are being sought to cover the costs. 

City of Launceston council community and economic development manager Tracey Mallett said in the council agenda that having the marquee over the pool would provide a “fantastic” outlook over the gorge.

“The surrounding grassland is already far from level and the playground upgrade works will significantly affect the topography of the lawns, making it too uneven for a marquee,” Ms Mallett said. 

“Structural engineers have confirmed it is possible for scaffolding to be installed in the pool to support the marquee without damaging the pool.”

The increased cost comes from having to install the scaffolding manually, rather than with a machine, Ms Mallett said. 

“This factor increases the construction costs beyond the budget provided to the organising committee, so it is proposed Council contribute $50,000,” she said.

“Being such a unique site does present some logistical challenges, although the organising committee is confident all others have been considered within budget.”

Having the marquee over the pool would allow the lawn area to be used for the event arrival and canapes, which would be set out in mini harvest market style, the agenda said.  

The best of the nation’s tourism operators from each state will attend the event, along with tourism industry representatives. 

Aldermen will vote on the proposal at Monday’s meeting.
