The Bureau of Meteorology said it was a cold start to the day, with Launceston Airport recording -4.3 degrees, -4 degrees at Ross and Ouse, -2 degrees in Launceston, and 0 degrees in Devonport.

Duty forecaster David Matthews said temperatures had been “pretty cold” in the state’s North.

“In Launceston city, pretty much from July 9, minimum temperatures have been below 0,” he said.

Mr Matthews said the average minimum temperature for the city was 2.3 degrees, and that temperatures had been sitting a few degrees lower.

Minimum temperatures across the weekend were expected to stay cool, with Launceston looking at -1 degrees on Saturday, 1 degree on Sunday, and 2 degrees on Monday. St Helens on the state’s East Coast will be one of the warmer spots in the North, with a minimum of 4 degrees on Saturday, 3 degrees on Sunday, and 4 degrees on Monday.

Deloraine in the Meander Valley, on the other hand, will be cooler, with -2 degrees on Saturday, 0 degrees on Sunday, and 1 degree on Monday.

In Launceston, Saturday morning was expected to be frosty and foggy, clearing throughout the day.

Mr Matthews said the next few days would be chilly, but the below average temperatures would not continue for the rest of the week.

“It’s going to warm up a little bit toward Monday and Tuesday,” he said.
