Following the teenager’s death, Population Health Services were notified of laboratory evidence of meningococcal.

Public Health director Mark Veitch said the small number of people who recently came in close contact with the deceased would be provided with antibiotics in case they were carrying the infection themselves.

“Population Health Services staff are involved in the public health response to this case and extend their condolences to the girl’s family and friends,” Dr Veitch said.

“Second, linked cases are uncommon, but awareness and early treatment are important.

“Meningococcal disease is a rare but serious condition.

“If you think you or someone close to you has meningococcal disease seek help immediately from your doctor, hospital emergency department or ambulance.”

Dr Veitch said this was the first case of the disease in Tasmania this year.

In 2017, there were 16 confirmed cases in the state.
