Organiser Alison Filgate said the project was in preparation for the annual Teddy Bears Picnic, which will take place on October 24 at City Park.
Ms Filgate said she found out that not many children had teddies, so as a challenge wanted the community to get knitting and crocheting.
“It’s just a really nice thing to do, to give a child a teddy bear,” she said.
“It was also about uniting people in our community.”
IN OTHER NEWS:
Anyone from seasoned knitters to those new to the craft were urged to get involved.
“At the picnic we’re going to have a little adoption station, where the kids can name their teddy bear,” Ms Filgate said.
The knitted or sewn teddies can be dropped off at the Launceston YMCA or headspace Launceston.
Knitting and crocheting sessions will also be held at the YMCA later in July and August.
