The development assessment has been approved by consultancy Environmental Service and Design, which reviewed the proposal.
“Land is suitable for the intended use,” ES&D said in its report.
“Having regard to an environmental site assessment that demonstrates that the level of contamination does not present a risk to human health or the environment.”
The proposal has also been cleared by the Tasmanian Heritage Council.
The council concluded that “the works have no impact on heritage fabric and no appreciable impact on the significant elements or spaces of Macquarie House.”

The council added that the designs of the proposed toilets were discreet and were suitable for the historic building.
The proposed toilet block will be part of the City of Launceston council’s redevelopment of Launceston’s Civic Square.
The proposed area for the redevelopment will be a section of Macquarie House.
It will be part of the project to transform the building into an innovation hub for Enterprize Tasmania’s Launceston branch.
