Mr Jones comes to the role after ex-chief executive Terry Edwards left his post on Friday, after announcing his retirement in April.
Mr Jones steps into the role after a career spent working with Indigenous people dealing with native title and land rights, in addition to his work in dispute resolution in Papua New Guinea.
“I am keen to spend the next little while listening to industry, government and stakeholders to see where the sector is at and what opportunities and challenges we face,” he said.
Mr Edwards resigned after 16 years with the association.
“We recognise Terry’s enormous contribution to the timber industry and Tasmania while he has been at the helm of FIAT...his wit and passion will be missed,” chairman Glenn Britton said.
