City of Launceston council was made aware of the Department of State Growth’s plans to install traffic lights at the Mowbray Connector “some time ago”.

Mayor Albert van Zetten said the department met with the council to explain its reasons and were told traffic lights were the “most sustainable option”.
“During those briefings, State Growth demonstrated that traffic lights were the most sustainable option, particularly in view of future traffic modelling,” Alderman van Zetten said.
“A roundabout at that site, based on State Growth's modelling, would not satisfy future traffic needs on the highway.”

A number of aldermen expressed their concerns during the briefings.
Alderman van Zetten said safety at the intersection had been a concern for the public and with aldermen for “a number of years”.
The council will now seek a meeting with infrastructure minister Jeremy Rockliff.
