A Launceston Supreme Court jury unanimously found Christo Brown guilty on Thursday afternoon.
The now 21-year-old could be heard saying “what” and repeatedly shook his head as the verdict was delivered.
He was found guilty on charges of aggravated burglary, demanding property with the intent to menace or steal, and rape.
The trial, before Justice Robert Pearce, began on Monday.
Brown entered the elderly woman’s home in July 2015. He told her to take off her clothes, before raping her and demanding $250.
The morning after the crime he flew to Melbourne, but was later arrested and extradited back to Tasmania.
Brown did not give evidence during the trial, but denied involvement in the crimes during a police interview in 2015.
During a video interview with detectives, the woman described the moment she woke in the middle of the night to discover a man’s arm around her neck.
She told police she believed the man was “desperate for sex” and when she asked him why he wanted money she believed he said for drugs.
It took jurors five and a half hours to reach a guilty verdict.
Justice Pearce ordered Brown to undertake a psychological assessment.
He was remanded in custody and is due to reappear in court on September 3.
