It would be built on a “big, unused” site near the old Mole Creek Primary School, committee member Jenny Lloyd said.
“There was tension when the old school building was knocked down. So the community decided it should be used for some other purpose.” she said.
The Mole Creek Progress Association already has a community garden at the rear of the building.
“With the big space in front of the school, the general feeling among the community is that it could be put to good use as a children’s playground,” Ms Lloyd said.
Some members of the committee suggested making the playground one that is nature-based.
“Because it’s such a picturesque part of the state, and we have that beautiful back drop of the Great Western Tiers and the green paddocks, that it could reflect the natural landscape rather than plastic parks that don’t reflect the area,” Ms Lloyd said.
The group would like to use raw materials that represent the area.
“There is such a rich history of the timber saw mill, the limeworks, so hopefully we could build different structures from our material,” she said.
“Hopefully from our community, through donations, we could make mini replicas of the mountains and the caves that could be used to climb over.”
Ms Lloyd said the playground could even become a tourist destination.
“The potential is there for it to be something different and a little bit interesting,” she said.
“We want the community to be involved to create a real story around the park, so that in future when people talk about building the park they can say ‘my dad helped build the park’.”
A community meeting will be held at the site on July 14 at 11am.
“We have an idea of doing it a certain way, but at the end of the day if that’s not what the community wants then we’ll be guided by them,” Ms Lloyd said.
