Organised through Plastic Free Launceston, community members joined City of Launceston council representatives in raising awareness of the problems with singe-use plastics. Greens Senator Peter Whish-Wilson said Plastic Free July was an opportunity for people to “break their addiction” to plastics.
“Convenience is a double-edged sword,” he said.
“I feel like people need to give some of the convenience away to better manage their habits.
“Plastic bags have been banned for a while here, so I think people are fairly used to that.
“Now it’s time to think about other items such as bottles and straws.”
Plastic Free Launceston will be at Harvest Market throughout the next four weeks as part of Plastic Free July. The group will also host a bag making workshop on July 15.
