Formerly known as Northbank, Riverbend Park will be spelt as two words, after Alderman Danny Gibson questioned the number of ways it had been spelt in the council’s agenda at Monday’s meeting.
“It’s going to be known as Tassie’s best playground, so I will settle for Riverbend one word and one capital letter,” he said.
A number of names that paid tribute to the area’s Aboriginal heritage were put forward, but were not considered after the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre expressed their concern.
Deputy mayor Rob Soward said the TAC were “strongly opposed” to the suggested names.
Alderman Soward said it was great to see list of suggestions “as long as your arm” which had been given “considerable thought” and explanations.
Three Rivers Park and Lettermairrener Park were the two other names short listed.
The park was unable to remain known as Northbank because of an area in Trevallyn having the same name.
