Blues coach Sam Lonergan told The Examiner on Tuesday that the 31-year-old had left Windsor Park to join NTFA division 1 reigning premiers South Launceston.
Whiting, who played his 150th match and earned life membership earlier this month, has been in and out of Launceston’s best 22 this season and did not take to the field in either the seniors or development league at Kingston’s Twin Ovals on Saturday.
The two-time Blues premiership winner has played seven TSL matches in 2018 with a 16-goal return.
“Sonny was struggling to commit to what we required as a football club at the highest level and that was impacting on him playing and being available for games,” Lonergan said.
“So the right decision was made for Sonny to move on at this stage of his career and we wish him all the best.
“On field, Sonny has been in and out of the side and we have been preparing for this day for a while now… and I’m relatively comfortable we have a number of players that can play his role in the forward line.”
Lonergan said North-West youngsters Giacomo Millucci, Tom Mundy and Blair Rubock were all options to fill the void. Launceston has slipped to fifth on the TSL ladder following three-straight losses heading into its round 14 battle with Glenorchy down south.
Undefeated South Launceston has the bye this week before taking on Bracknell on July 7. The NTFA’s deadline for player movement closes on Friday.
Whiting and Bulldogs coach Leigh Harding were unavailable for comment.
