QVMAG visual art and design curator Ashleigh Whatling said children from kindergarten to grade six were tasked with creating a piece based on the theme Inside Out for the gallery’s ArtStart exhibition program.
“It’s about displaying what you’re feeling on the inside, and on the outside,” she said.
“They’ve been really brave and honest … it has really brought out some intense works.”
The ArtStart program aims to develop and showcase visual art talent in children.
The program promotes the philosophies of Tasmanian lecturer and artist Terry Woodward.
“There’s a lot of sophistication in the techniques and feelings in the pieces,” Ms Whatling said.
“Art is like learning another language.
“But, anyone from any language can understand it.”
- The exhibition opened on June 20, and will run until November 2018 at the Queen Victoria Art Gallery
