On Tuesday more than 150 people attended a fundraising night organised by The Star and The Examiner, in support of this year’s Vinnies CEO Sleepout.
An exclusive viewing of Brothers’ Nest raised more than $1500 for the cause and Star Theatre co-owner Ben Davis said the team were thrilled with the response.
“It was an awesome night and from our perspective, giving back to the community is at the core of what we do here,” he said.
“The support of the community allows us to open our doors everyday, so it is imperative to us that we are able to give back. To be able to use film to do that is just an added bonus.”
On Thursday night, business managers, chief executives and community leaders from across the state will embrace a cold night under the stars at UTAS Stadium.
In the past seven years the CEO Sleepout has raised more than $900,000 for Tasmanians in need, with funds raised for this year’s event already tipping the $1 million mark.
St Vincent de Paul Society Tasmania president Toni Muir said more than 1600 Tasmanians experienced homelessness every night.
“Although homelessness is often considered a problem reserved for our major cities, hundreds of Tasmanians are still in vital need of support,” he said.
“All funds raised through tonight’s CEO Sleepout will stay in Tasmania, to provide crucial assistance to people experiencing homelessness in our communities.”
Among this year’s Sleepout participants will be The Examiner’s editor Courtney Greisbach and marketing coordinator Ashton Whiley.
Greisbach said she was proud to support such an important cause.
“This is something small we can do, that will hopefully have a far-reaching impact,” she said.
“The Examiner is proud to get behind causes that have a direct and positive impact on so many Tasmanians in need.”
