More than 70 dancers competed across primary, beginner, novice, intermediate and premier classes as part of the event.
Interstate educator Fiona Bocherds presided over the spectacle, which featured performers as young as four.
Launceston Competitions secretary Margaret East said highland dancing had a rich history within the annual event.
“I remember doing it when I was eight and I’m 73 now, so it has definitely been going for a while,” she said.
“Performers have the opportunity to compete in national titles, which involve dancing the blue bonnet and scotch measure.”
Saturday’s highland dancing will be followed by Irish dancing on Sunday.
The theatrical dance aspect of the Launceston Competitions will commence on July 6 at the Princess Theatre and run until July 14. This is the 116th year the competitions have been held.
