The match will be the first of its kind to be played at Winnaleah Recreation Reserve since the Winnaleah Magpies were put into recess last year. 

There will be no shortage of North-East representation in Saturday week’s game, with George Town’s squad boasting a number of former Magpie players.

Winnaleah club president Lester Rainbow said the game would unite the community.

“The North East netball teams have a bye that week, so they will be able to help out around the ground, which will be fantastic,” he said.

“It will be a chance for all those involved with the club to say thank you and also goodbye.

“All the traditional aspects of a country footy game will be there, from a community kiosk to just people sitting around having a chat.”

The 110-year-old club was placed into recess last October after having its request to play in the NTFA division two rejected.  It came after the club’s only other only remaining North East Football Union opponent decided to head into recess.

The NTFA board and members voted 24-5 against the request, despite the club having 70 players on its roster. 

A number of players on the club’s roster are now playing for Scottsdale or George Town.

Mr Rainbow said while the club was not a part of the 2018 NTFA season, it was far from forgotten.

“One of the things about footy is that there is always great camaraderie and mateship among a team when it is out on the field,” he said.

“The boys that are playing at Scottsdale and George Town have all made new mates, but June 30 is an opportunity for some of them to come home.

“We are very thankful to the George Town and Bridgenorth football clubs for allowing us to have this game.”

The match will be held at Winnaleah Recreation Reserve at 3pm on June 30.
