More than 250 people are expected to take part in the event which happens from August 31 until September 2. 

Flinders Island Harriers president, and race organiser Michael Withers said the event was an action-packed weekend. 

“We have a five-kilometre run on the Friday for people to meet and then we have a pasta night and guest speaker,” Mr Withers said. 

The 2018 guest speaker is ultra marathon runner Samantha Gash.

“She has run ultra-marathons all over the world raising money,” he said. 

Former guest speakers include Steven Bradbury and Pat Farmer, who has attended the event twice.

The main events, the marathon and pub-to-pub, get underway on Saturday. 

“You can either do the straight pub-to-pub which is 25.4 kilometres, or you can do the marathon where we go around the mountain and through the national park,” Mr Withers said. 

“Then on the Sunday we have another five kilometre run and all the presentations are done after that.” 

The event is mostly attended by locals, but is getting more entrants annually. 

“We probably have between 60 and 80 people that do the marathon because its’s the more serious one,” he said.

“Last year we had about 40 visitors, but we’re hoping to get more this year. We’re getting a few Victorians now, it has usually been mostly Tasmanians.”  

The festival is organised entirely by volunteers. 

“On our committee we have about seven and then that many again who constantly help out,” Mr Withers said.

“Then on the actual day we get quite a few extras to run drink stations, we also get the local State Emergency Service involved. They also set up the road closures.”

The event started in 2007 as a community fun run and health promotion day.  

Entry into the festival starts at $10, with the marathon entry about $40.
