Pupils in grades 4, 5, and 6 have the opportunity to be involved in a collaborative art exhibition, held at the Academy of Art gallery.
The exhibition is a feature of works by TasTAFE art teacher Michael Kay, who has invited the pupils to be part of the exhibition process.
RELATED STORIES:
On Tuesday, about 23 pupils were invited to spend part of the day in the textiles studio, mixing with Kay’s textiles students.
Kay said the pupils had been part of the exhibition for about four years.
“A group of kids will be chosen to be curators and learn how to hang and light the exhibition,” he said.
The pupils will also be part of the exhibition, helping to provide the finishing touches of one of the major pieces.
“My exhibition is mainly around Cradle Mountain so there will be a silhouette of the mountain as part of the exhibition,” he said.
“The kids will collage some fabric onto card to put on the silhouette.”
Kay said his exhibition had taken him 12 months to finish and featured some big and small pieces related to Cradle Mountain and the Cataract Gorge.
He said he wanted to convey the “sense of awe” he felt when he visited those places.
“They are just phenomenal landscapes that leave you speechless.”
Waverley Primary School art teacher Sally Foley said the pupils would gather the fabric and collage it over the next four weeks for the silhouette.
“Projects like this help to broaden our students’ awareness of art and culture,” she said.
Mrs Foley has been art teacher at Waverley for about 15 years.
She said pupils who participated in the exhibition all rated it as a highlight when they leave Grade 6.
Select pupils will also be able to invite their parents to the official opening of the gallery.
Kay said he wanted to find a school that had a strong arts culture and curriculum and one that may not have had the opportunity otherwise.
The exhibition, Towards an Origin: Michael Kay, will be officially opened at the Academy Gallery on July 16. An opening will be held from 5.30-7.30pm.
